COEUR d'ALENE - Postseason tournaments are a time for players to make a name for themselves.

Friday night was no exception.

In the first game of the 5A Region 1 girls basketball tournament, Post Falls junior Danielle Failor scored a game-high 25 points to lead the third-seeded Trojans past the second-seeded and defending state champion Lewiston Bengals 51-44 in overtime at Coeur d'Alene High.

"Right now, I told our kids to enjoy the moment," first-year Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. "We're having fun. We're going to come out and play hard on Tuesday. None of our kids have been there (state) and are hungry to get there."

Later, sophomore Brittany Tackett scored a game-high 15 points to lead the top-seeded Coeur d'Alene Vikings past fourth-seeded Lake City 58-35.

On Tuesday, Coeur d'Alene (17-2) will host Post Falls (12-8) in the regional title game, while Lake City (10-11) travels to a loser-out game at Lewiston (17-4). Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Post Falls 51, Lewiston 44, OT: The Trojans, who lost twice to Lewiston in 5A Inland Empire League play, jumped out to an 8-2 lead on the way to a 14-12 advantage after the first quarter. Lewiston took its first lead of the game early in the second quarter, 16-14 on a jumper from Tisha Phillips.

Post Falls did not regain the lead until midway through the third quarter on a jumper by Failor.

“I was real pleased with how we came back,” Allert said. “We lost our composure a little bit in the second and third quarter.”

In overtime, Post Falls guard Katie King hit a 3-pointer with 1:17 remaining to give the Trojans a 48-44 lead they did not surrender.

“Katie just hit a big shot for us,” Allert said. “She sprained her ankle in the Moscow game and just wouldn’t stop out there.”

“This was an extremely big win for us tonight,” Failor said. “It was a goal of ours to make it to the state tournament this year.”

Lewiston beat Post Falls 46-33 on Jan. 7 at Post Falls and 43-36 on Jan. 17 in Lewiston.

“The first time we played them, we didn’t play well at all,” Failor said. “This was definitely a confidence booster. We’ve had a hard time beating really good teams, but this just pushes our confidence up.”

Lewiston post Chelsea Waters, who has signed with Gonzaga, missed her third straight game due to an undisclosed illness.

“She’s not feeling well right now,” Lewiston coach Pat Teichmer said of Waters. “We don’t know if she’ll be ready Tuesday yet. We’re going to practice tomorrow morning and we’d love to have her back.”

Without her, Lewiston, which has won the last two regional titles, took a 32-30 lead after three quarters, but was held to two points in overtime, both on free throws.

“Post Falls played great tonight,” Teichmer said. “They did a great job. We knew we were undersized and they played a great game. We’re all right. We’ve got another home game. We’ll be all right.”

POST FALLS — Gonzales 5, King 6, Franklin 0, Smith 3, Litalien 7, Runkle 5, Failor 25, Perrin 0, Meehan 0.

LEWISTON — K. Wilson 5, L. Wilson 3, Schlader 1, Bernatz 2, Hansen 13, Hobart 5, Wells 0, Phillips 15.

Coeur d’Alene 58, Lake City 35: With two starters in foul trouble, Tackett came off the bench to spark the Vikings to an 18-2 lead after the first quarter.

“It was fun at first,” Tackett said. “I was a little nervous coming into the game, but I had a flow going.”

Tackett scored 11 points in the first half as the Vikings built a 25-11 lead at halftime.

“Our student section cheering had me pumped up,” Tackett said. “I started to get more comfortable the crazier they were getting.”

Coeur d’Alene opened a 10-0 lead before Lake City scored its first points of the game on a layup by Maggie Heidenreich. Kendalyn Brainard added 13 points for Coeur d’Alene.

“We kind of had to use our depth,” Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. “We’ve got to play four quarters and sometimes, our sophomores have to come through for us. Those are the things you’ve got to have sometimes.”

Coeur d’Alene won at Post Falls 61-32 on Nov. 18 and won 55-42 in Coeur d’Alene on Jan. 13.

“They’re much improved,” said Poffenroth of Post Falls. “They’re going to be a much better team than we faced earlier this year and going to improve after the win tonight. King does a good job at guard and Failor is a candidate for MVP in our league. They’ve got the kids and coaching to have a legitimate shot on Tuesday, but it’s our job to keep it from happening.”

Lake City pulled to within 33-22 in the third quarter, but was outscored 21-11 in the fourth, and lost to the Vikings for the fourth time in four meetings this season.

“I thought our girls played hard,” Lake City coach Royce Johnston said. “But it’s tough to play from behind. Coeur d’Alene plays good defense and you can’t miss free throws against them.”

Lake City travels to Lewiston in a loser-out game Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“They beat us the other night (Tuesday),” Johnston said. “There’s no way that team is 20 points better than us. I truly think we can win that game.”
