PASCO - Beau Gleed (120), Hayden Wise (126), Nico Moreno (152) and Jonathan Perales (170) were crowned champions in their weight class at the 4 A Columbia Basin Big Nine District (CBBN) wrestling tournament over the weekend.
Unfortunately, the wrestler's efforts weren't enough to see the Chiefs capture district honors as Moses Lake (277) finished second to the hosting Riverhawks (314). Wenatchee (271) placed third, Davis (190) fourth, Eisenhower (181) fifth, Walla Walla (164.5), sixth, and Richland (140), finished last.
"I thought we performed really well over the weekend despite not having the numbers,' coach Jamie Wise said. "Chiawana had a little more depth than us and that was basically the difference in the tournament"
Two days of brawn, brains, blood, sweat and tears was on display Friday and Saturday, as hundreds of wrestlers and dozens of coaches were on a quest to gain CBBN bragging rights and the opportunity to move on to the regional championships.
The bleachers inside a sparkling new gymnasium at Chiawana High School were packed with rabid wrestling fans as the action got underway on day one of the tournament.
The Chiefs got out to a great start, winning four of their first six matches. Fernando Leyva (106), Beau Gleed (120) and Hayden Wise (126) all won by pin.
Moses Lake stumbled a bit in the 138-160 weight, winning only a couple matches. Jonathan Perales (170) pinned his opponent at 1:06 of the first round to get the Chiefs back on track.
"We had a few disappointments on day one ... had a couple of seconds at 106 and 113 to start out," Wise said. "We had a little trouble in the mid-weights, but turned it in the right direction heading into day two of the meet."
The Chiefs capitalized on the momentum the second day of action and made a charge, but came up just short of winning the tournament.
Moses Lake got solid performances from several wrestlers who made a deep run at district. Fernando Leyva (106) took second place, losing to Chiawana's Chris Montelongo 5-0. He beat fellow Chief Trey Long in the semi-final match to advance. Chase Clasen (120), finished second, losing 5-3 to Juan Lopez from Davis, Antony Barajas (126), Jordan LaCelle (182), and Derek Fredrickson (195) placed third. Nico Hernandez (160) came in fourth, and Roman Martinez, placed fifth.
"Our guys really dominated on Saturday," Wise said. " Jordan LaCelle was a real bright spot for us who came through with some big pins and finished third in his class.I kind of felt bad for Derek Fredrickson, who had been wrestling well but didn't make the finals."
The top four finishers in each weight class will be moving on to the regional tournament, which is being held at Moses Lake High School Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
The Chiefs will have 10 wrestlers, three of which are three alternates taking part.
Those grapplers include Fernando Leyva and, Trey Long (106), Chase Clasen and Jordan Torres(113), Beau Gleed (120), Hayden Wise and Antony Barajas (126)(126), Nico Moreno (152) and Jonathan Perales (170), Jordan LaCelle (182) and Roman Martinez (220).
"It should be a good meet," Wise said. "I really like our chances."
