MOSCOW - A two-point third quarter proved to be the downfall of the Lakeland High girls basketball team, as the second-seeded Hawks fell to the top-seeded Moscow Bears 37-34 in the championship game of the 4A Region 1 tournament Tuesday night at Bear Den.
Moscow (11-10), which won its third straight regional title, advances to state Feb. 16-18 at Timberline High in Boise. Lakeland, which led 23-21 at halftime, finished 13-11.
"We played a pretty solid first half, and against their zone the game plan seemed to work really well," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "At halftime they switched defenses on us (to a man-to-man), and we struggled getting offensive looks in the third quarter.”
Cieana Close led Lakeland with 11 points. Toni Tapplin had six rebounds and three steals, Kacie Derby six rebounds, and Darby Murray three steals and three assists.
Trailing by six points after three quarters, Lakeland tied the game at 31 in the fourth, before the Bears moved ahead to stay.
Taylor Anderson of Moscow led all scorers with 12 points.
“We were on their floor, (against) the defending (regional) champs,” Seymour said. “We had them on the ropes and they responded.”
Lakeland was 0-4 vs. Moscow this season, three of the losses by five points or less.
“It’s a bummer; these kids have done a lot of good things this year,” Seymour said. “They battled; they just weren’t able to knock off Moscow. I feel bad for the kids; I felt we were good enough to do it. We just came up short.”
