COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene High junior Caelyn Orlandi was a little under the weather after waking up the morning of the Vikings' 5A Region I girls basketball tournament championship game at Elmer Jordan Court.
But the flu had no effect on her jump shot later that night as she scored a game-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers, as the top-seeded Vikings rolled past the third-seeded Post Falls Trojans 50-22 on Tuesday night to advance to next week's state 5A tournament.
"When I woke up today, I felt awful," Orlandi said. "But I made it to school and am OK now. We haven't won a regional title in a long time. Now we're going to go down and do our best at state. That's what we've been working for all year."
Coeur d'Alene's last regional title came in 2009, when the Vikings finished a perfect 25-0. They've now won five regional titles under coach Dale Poffenroth, who is in his eighth season at Coeur d'Alene.
"It's kind of nice," Poffenroth said. "It's nice to have one."
Coeur d'Alene (18-2), ranked No. 1 in 5A, opens the state 5A tournament next Thursday against the third-place team out of District 3 at 5:15 p.m. (PST) at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
“We’ve never been on the top part of the bracket,” Coeur d’Alene senior guard Kyeli Parker said. “We’re going to try to go all the way through it.”
Post Falls (12-9) will travel to Lewiston (18-4) on Friday to play for the region’s other berth to state.
“Our whole goal was to make it to state,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “We’ve got another chance to accomplish that goal on Friday. It’s going to be a tough challenge, but we’ll be ready for it.”
Post Falls led 10-9 after the first quarter, and stretched the advantage to 12-9 on a jumper by Lexi Smith. Coeur d’Alene took the lead midway through the second on a jumper by Kendalyn Brainard.
“It was a good start, and then we got ambushed,” Allert said.
Orlandi hit a 3-pointer to give Coeur d’Alene a 17-14 lead with 3:38 remaining in the first half. The Vikings closed the half with a 12-0 run, and didn’t allow Post Falls to score again until a jumper by Dani Failor two minutes into the third quarter.
“Goose (Orlandi) got a little momentum going on that 3 and then we realized we’re in better shape than they were,” Poffenroth said. “Our defensive surge was the key to the game in the second and third quarter.”
Failor, who scored a game-high 26 points against Lewiston on Friday, was limited to four points due to foul trouble in the championship game.
“After she got her second foul (midway through the second quarter), we were able to get some things going,” Poffenroth said. “They need Dani to be successful.”
“After Dani got her second foul, they came out and pressured us,” Allert said. “We lost our composure and didn’t get it back.”
Kyeli Parker added seven points for Coeur d’Alene, which capped the night by cutting down the net in their home gym.
“Me and Erin (Legel) had never cut down a net before,” Parker said. “That was our goal tonight, to cut down the nets in our final home game.”
Coeur d’Alene had beaten Post Falls by 29 and 13 points in earlier Inland Empire League games.
“The first thing I told them after the game was we need to put this game out of our minds,” Allert said. “We’re going to need to execute better offensively and execute better as a group on Friday night.”
