NOXON - As the basketball season nears its conclusion, the Scarlets might be playing their best basketball. After a 63-54 victory over Class B Mission on Thursday, Arlee improved to 5-2 in 14-C district play with a 51-49 victory over Noxon last Friday night.
Mahalia Hendren scored 18 points and the Scarlets held off a late rally by the Lady Red Devils for the district win. It was a back-and-forth game with Noxon grabbing the initial 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Arlee bounced back in the second with a 17-11 run and led 27-23 going into halftime.
The Scarlets continued to build on their lead, increasing it to 41-34 heading into the fourth quarter. Noxon went on a 15-10 run in the final stanza but couldn't quite pull off the comeback.
Along with Hendren's 18 points, Arlee also got 15 from Whitney Malatare. The win improved the Scarlets' overall record to 8-6.
Malatare's 15-point performance came after her 16-point opus against Mission Valley rival Mission last Thursday night.
The Scarlets picked up a thrilling 63-54 overtime victory at the Dawg House.
Five of Malatare's 16 points came in overtime, and the Scarlets outscored Mission 11-2 in the fifth quarter.
Arlee had a 21-20 halftime lead after six ties before Mission took a 29-26 advantage to open the third quarter.
Arlee went on an 11-3 run to finish out the period and had a 37-32 lead going into the fourth.
Mission got a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to force overtime but Malatare opened up the extra-period with a three-pointer and it was Arlee's show after that.
Hendren and Alexis Shick also had 16.
Arlee will host Charlo on Friday and Hot Springs on Saturday.
