POST FALLS - And now, the playoff picture in the 5A Region 1 boys basketball tournament is muddy.
Luke Thoreson scored a team-high 11 points to lead the Post Falls Trojans past the Coeur d'Alene Vikings in the 5A Inland Empire League finale for both schools Wednesday night at The Arena.
With the Trojans' win, and a victory by Lake City at Lewiston in other league play on Wednesday, Coeur d'Alene, Lake City and Post Falls finished tied for first in the league standings.
Both Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene entered Wednesday's game tied for second in the latest state media boys basketball poll.
A coin flip among the three will be held today to determine seeding to the regional tournament, starting next Friday at the determined No. 1 seed.
After Post Falls (17-2, 4-2 5A IEL) opened a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter, the Vikings rallied to cut the deficit to 8-7 after the first. Coeur d'Alene (13-5, 4-2) pulled to within 16-15 early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Joe Roletto.
Post Falls went on a 7-1 run to build a 23-16 lead on a basket by Michael Hillman.
"I think our problems began when we fell behind early," Coeur d'Alene coach Kent Leiss said. "We missed a couple really easy lay-ins and six easy shots close to the basket. When the game is close in the fourth quarter, you really need to have made those shots."
Coeur d'Alene shot 1 of 6 at the free throw line in the first half.
"We just shot poorly from the foul line," Leiss said. "It was a hard fought physical game. It was a pretty evenly matched game. It was just a physical game and they made more baskets than we did."
Coeur d’Alene moved to within 23-21 late in the third quarter and got to within a point on another 3-pinter by Roletto.
Marcus Colbert hit a 3-pointer to give the Trojans a 31-26 lead with 2:30 remaining.
“I thought our composure was good tonight,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “These aren’t the kind of games that we like to play. In the past, we’d like to get out and run, but we’re not that kind of team this year.”
Colbert finished with 10 points for Post Falls, which hosts Moscow on Saturday.
“We knew it was going to be a battle,” Colbert said. “We just had to execute and win all four quarters. We just need to keep playing good defense.”
Roletto finished with a game-high 12 points, followed by Ty Higbie and Deon Watson with seven points apiece for Coeur d’Alene.
“It’s hard to get the ball inside when they’re sagging inside,” Leiss said. “Credit to Post Falls for playing great defense. Our defense was playing well until we started fouling, but we just struggled on the offensive end.”
Coeur d’Alene hosts Kellogg on Saturday.
