Corey Pavin made a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Peter Senior and win the Allianz Championship for his first Champions Tour title Sunday at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Fla.
Both players shot a final-round 71 to finish tied at 11-under 205. Senior forced the playoff with a birdie on the last hole of regulation, but his birdie try in the playoff stopped an inch short of the cup.
Mark Calcavecchia appeared to be cruising to the victory when he birdied the par-5 11th hole to take a three-shot lead over Pavin. But Calcavecchia, who was 5 under for the day at that point, bogeyed six of his last seven holes to finish tied for seventh after a 73.
Bernhard Langer (71) and Michael Allen (69) tied for third place.
• Jessica Korda broke out her father's trademark scissor-kick celebration when she won the Women's Australian Open at Royal Melbourne in Melbourne, Austraila, for her first LPGA Tour title.
She decided against the cart wheels that her father, Petr, did when he won the 1998 Australian Open tennis title. Maybe she was still dizzy following a topsy-turvy final day of the tournament.
After losing the lead with a late bogey run, the 18-year-old American fought back to take the last spot in an improbable six-player playoff, then won with a 25-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole.
Baseball
Catcher Mike Napoli and the Texas Rangers finalized a $9.4 million, one-year contract to avoid a salary arbitration hearing.
Napoli set career highs last season by hitting .320 with 30 homers and 75 RBIs in 113 games in his first season with Texas, making starts at catcher, first base and designated hitter. He spent his first five major league seasons with the Los Angeles Angles before being traded twice in a five-day period last winter.
• LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri said a freshman pitcher from Bossier City has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested and booked with drunken driving in Baton Rouge, La.
Carson Baranik, 19, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison early Saturday on one count each of first-offense DWI, disobeying a red light and reckless driving.
The Cincinnati Reds took the right-hander in the 41st round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, but he decided to enroll at LSU and was expected to earn time as a reliever this season.
Tennis
The United States completed its 5-0 rout of Switzerland in the first round of the Davis Cup in Fribourg, Switzerland, with 19-year-old Ryan Harrison and John Isner winning the closing singles matches.
Harrison made his Davis Cup debut, defeating Michael Lammer 7-6 (0), 7-6 (4) to extend the Americans' lead to 4-0. Isner, who stunned Roger Federer in four sets Friday, then beat Marco Chuidinelli 6-3, 6-4 to give the U.S. its first sweep since a 2004 first-round series against Austria.
Harrison was selected by captain Jim Courier after the U.S. sealed its victory Saturday, when Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan beat Olympic doubles champions Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.
The U.S. will play at France in the April 6-8 quarterfinals. In other pairings, it's Argentina vs. Croatia, Austria vs. Spain and Czech Republic vs. Serbia.
• Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova won her second straight Pattaya Open title in Pattaya, Thailand, defeating Russia's Maria Kirilenko 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3.
Auto racing
John Force beat teammate Mike Neff to take the NHRA Winternationals Funny Car title at Pomona, Calif.
Force's daugher, Courtney, won her first Funny Car match, beating Bob Tasca.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also took home titles.
Skiing
Ivica Kostelic captured his second consecutive World Cup super-combined title with a victory in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, on the 2014 Sochi Olympics course, then hobbled off with an injured right knee that that might need surgery.
The Croatian was in visible pain during the victory celebration, using his ski poles like crutches and struggling onto the podium on the verge of tears while sister Janica looked on crying.
