SOUTH COUNTY - Today, Tuesday, Feb. 14, is the last day to vote in the maintenance and operation levy elections for the Royal and Wahluke School Districts.

Ballots must be post marked no later than Feb. 14 to be counted. Ballots may be deposited in a drop box at the Grant County Fire District No. 10 station at 522 Camelia St. in Royal City until 8 p.m.

Both districts are asking for two-year levies. Royal is seeking $1,102,000 in 2013 and $1,135,000 in 2014. The levy rate both years will be $2.24 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Wahluke is asking a rate of $2.91 per $1,000 both years. That would generate $1,346,000 in 2013 and $1,383,000 in 2014.

Funds from levies and the funding they trigger from state and federal sources are dedicated to programs that are desired locally but aren't paid for by the state basic education program.
