Jack Raymond Smith, 88, of Post Falls, died Feb. 9, 2012. Jack was born Oct. 30, 1923, to Eugene and Alice Smith (Creasman) in Iowa City, Iowa.
He moved to Los Angeles as a child and graduated from Fremont High School. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was assigned to Alameda Naval Air Station as an electrician servicing aircraft. He married his first wife, Frieda, and they were blessed with two sons, Gary and Russell.
After the war he returned to Los Angeles and began his career as a police officer with the Inglewood Police Department. After 20-plus years of service Jack retired at the rank of Captain, having commanded the patrol division.
While still with the police department Jack met and fell in love with Lydia Schneider and they were married in 1972. In 1973 Jack, Lydia and her two children moved to Post Falls. Jack owned and operated the "Lazy S" Mobile Home Park for many years until retiring in 1996.
Jack was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and was also a member of the OWLS fraternal organization, rising to become their president. One of Jack's great passions was motorcycle riding. You could never find a better friend than Jack. He was always ready and willing to talk your ear off on any given topic.
Jack is survived by his wife, Lydia; his son, Gary (Judy); his step-son, Jeff Schneider (Kathy) and his step-daughter, Joni Morrow. In addition he has 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by his niece, Marilyn Vaughn and two nephews, Gene and Glenn Vaughn.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Ursula Vaughn and son Russell.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d'Alene.
