MATTAWA - A 28-year-old Mattawa woman and her unborn child were killed after she was shot in Mattawa.

At about 11 p.m. Saturday, police and emergency medical personnel responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on Third Place, according to Grant County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Ryan Rectenwald.

The woman, who was seven-and-a-half months pregnant, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transferred by Grant County Fire District 8 ambulance to Othello Community Hospital, where she and her unborn child died a short time later, Rectenwald stated.

The remains are in the custody of the Grant County Coroner, who Rectenwald said, will release the woman's identity once it is confirmed and next of kin have been notified.

Mattawa police, Grant County Sheriff's investigators and an Othello police detective are investigating what led to the shooting. The investigation is in its early stages and nothing more will be released at this time, Rectenwald stated Sunday.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact sheriff's detective Kim Cook through MACC dispatch at 509-762-1160 or toll free within Washington State at 888-431-9911.

Information can also be sent to crimetips@co.grant.wa.us. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
