MOSES LAKE - Two teenage girls were arrested after allegedly setting a fire in their house while their mother was in the bathroom.
Moses Lake police and firefighters responded to a residence on Evergreen Drive Monday at about 6:15 a.m., after the mother called 9-1-1 to report a house fire.
Investigating officers determined the fire was intentionally set by the girls, ages 16 and 17, who reside at the home, according to Moses Lake Police Capt. Dave Ruffin on Wednesday.
One or both of the girls allegedly lit a piece of paper and dropped it on gasoline they had poured on the floor outside of the bathroom of the residence, Ruffin stated. During this time the girls' mother was reportedly inside the bathroom, but she came out when the smoke alarm was triggered and was apparently able to extinguish the flames before authorities arrived on scene.
Both of the teens were arrested on charges of attempted murder and booked into the Grant County Juvenile Center, Ruffin stated.
No reported injuries resulted from the incident, although there was some fire and smoke damage inside the home.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Moses Lake Police Department at 509-764-3900 or through dispatch at 509-762-1160.
