NAMPA - The clock ran out on the Cinderella of the state 3A girls basketball tournament.
But they had fun at the ball.
A team with few expectations at the beginning of the season, the Timberlake Tigers roared all the way to the state title game, where they fell to the undefeated Marsh Valley Eagles 64-47 on Saturday at the Idaho Center.
Timberlake (15-12) trailed by as many as 19 in the second, narrowing the gap to nine points in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Kelly Madsen to make it 54-45 before the Eagles closed the game on a 10-2 run.
"We dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first quarter," Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. "In the second half, any time we'd get on a run, they'd answer."
Marsh Valley senior center Sarah Viehweg scored a game-high 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field as the Eagles capped a 25-0 season and won their first state title since 2005. Viehweg scored 17 on 8-of-9 shooting in the first half.
"Sarah stepped up and did a great job," Marsh Valley coach Kyle McQuivey said. "When she gets it going, she can open up the outside."
Marsh Valley finished the game 6 of 10 from the 3-point line, led by Jessica Dunn, who finished 5 of 6 from the 3-point line for 17 points.
Kara Wenstrom, who averaged 20 points in the first two games of the tournament, was held to six points on 1-of-8 shooting. Wenstrom started at point guard for Timberlake in last year’s title game. The Tigers graduated most of their firepower from last year’s squad.
“It feels awesome right now,” Wenstrom said of finishing second at state. “Nobody expected us to be in this position this year. It really doesn’t matter we didn’t get first right now.”
Wenstrom is hoping to continue her playing career at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash., where her teammate Kelly Madsen will play volleyball.
“It’s really cool,” Madsen said. “I’m proud of the rest of my teammates for getting this far. We played really well, even though we didn’t win. I’m really proud of everyone.”
“I think we surpassed every expectation this year,” Miller said. “We had a tremendous season and finished strong.”
Timberlake graduates Wenstrom, Taylor Mason and Madsen, who scored a team-high 18 points.
“Even though we’re only losing three players, we’re losing two-thirds of our offense,” Miller said. “Our underclassmen improved all season. If we continue to put in the work during the offseason, we could become a team that reloads instead of rebuilds. In the end, we just got outclassed underneath. They were just too big and too good.”
Junior Ashly George added seven points for Timberlake.
“This is a great group of girls to play with,” George said. “I’m really looking forward to next year.”
