NAMPA - The Coeur d'Alene High Vikings got back to what they do best on Saturday, holding the Highland Rams to 16-of-53 shooting from the field on the way to a 55-40 victory in the third-place game in the state 5A girls basketball tournament at Skyview High.

Viking junior Caelyn Orlandi scored a team-high 17 points, including a 60-foot buzzer beater in the first quarter.

"Our whole offense is based on timing," Orlandi said. "I made a similar shot in practice a few days ago."

Coeur d'Alene led 34-19 at halftime and extended the advantage to 38-21 early in the third quarter before the Rams battled back to pull within eight points.

"I thought we played really well," Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth said. "We got back to our style of defense in the first half and got into a 'you score, we score' game in the second half."

Coeur d'Alene and Highland were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final media poll and had a combined three losses coming into the tournament - with Highland only losing once.

"We hadn't lost in two months and I thought our kids picked themselves up well," Poffenroth said. "Both teams did. Highland played really well."

"Highland's a fun team to play against," Orlandi said. "They're not just one all-star."

Senior Erin Legel and sophomore Sydney Williams added 13 points apiece for Coeur d'Alene, which finished 20-3 and brought home a trophy from state for the eighth straight year - all since Poffenroth took over in 2004.

"It feels good to end my career with a win," Legel said. "Nothing compares to playing in a state title game - but it feels good to get a win."

Kyeli Parker had five points and a team-high four assists for Coeur d'Alene, which had played in the state title game each of the last six seasons.

"It was nice to send the two seniors (Legel and Kyeli Parker) out with a win," Poffenroth said. "We should be right back here next year and I'll hope to lead them back to Nampa. The whole thing should all come together."

Dylan Gonzalez scored 18 points for Highland, which finishes 21-3.
