POST FALLS - In some ways, "The Music Man" will be right at home at Post Falls High.
The musical set in River City, Iowa, in 1912 will be performed in Post Falls, Idaho's River City, starting Thursday, Feb. 23, with a food bank dinner theater fundraiser at the school.
Dinner featuring ham, baked beans and salad catered by Moon Dollars will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. and the play starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at Super 1 Foods-Post Falls and the school. Proceeds will be split between the food bank and the school's theater program.
"It's a casual atmosphere and a chance to see the talents of the students while enjoying dinner," said Sherry Wallis, food bank director. "It's a win-win-win and a wonderful collaboration between the school and food bank."
The musical will also be performed on Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets at the same outlets are $5.
"It will be great for families and it has well-known songs," said Linda Fry, PFHS theater director. "It's a classic."
Meredith Willson's "The Music Man" is about a con man named Harold Hill, played by student Arik Dunlow, who poses as a band leader and sells instruments and uniforms to naive residents before leaving town with the cash.
Town librarian and piano teacher Marian Paroo, played by Rebecca Alexander, sees through Hill and falls in love with him. Hill, who helps Paroo's shy brother Winthrop socially with his lisp, risks being caught due to the romance.
Winthrop is performed by Payton Edmonds, a student at Prairie View Elementary.
"The musical involves younger kids, so we're giving some of our elementary and middle school students a taste of what (theater) is like," Fry said.
Students performing in the production recently had some fun with a promotion at the recent school board meeting.
The barbershop quartet from River City, Iowa, who are school board members in the musical, performed for Post Falls School Board members. Dignitaries from both River City towns also met.
