All state, all conference

Fourteen Columbia Falls wrestlers were recently named all conference: Shonn Roberts, Cody Hader, Josiah Osborne, Adam Richardson, Zayne Brunz, Chase Ramberg, Bryan Shaffer, Travis Province, Kohl Thompson, Jacob Burgess, Josh Folsom, Marcus Ross, Jacob Babcock and Wayde Motichka. All state wrestlers included Roberts, Thompson, Folsom, Ross and Babcock.

Great Falls tourney

Freshman MatCat Shonn Roberts lost a match last weekend to nemesis Vito Degidio, of Bozeman, 10-7 in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions wrestling tournament in Great Falls. The 98-pound Roberts was coming off a state title one week earlier. Degidio beat Roberts at the Jug Beck tournament earlier this year in Missoula. The field of 54 wrestlers featured 23 state champions, including three four-time state champions. The annual event pits the best wrestlers from across the state and school classes in one tournament.

Track meet

Wildcat senior Derrick Williams placed fifth in the 800-meter finals at the Simplot Games indoor track and field meet Feb. 17. The games, held at Idaho State University in Pocatello, feature some of the best high school athletes from the U.S. and Canada. Williams' time was 1:57.6 - a personal best indoor track time. Williams traveled to the meet with fellow runners Zach Perrin and Troy Fraley of Kalispell.

Veterans box

Melee in the Mountains, a boxing event to benefit the Flathead Valley Chapter of Wounded Warriors, will take place Feb. 24 at the Flathead County Fairgrounds, in Kalispell, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and fights starting at 8 p.m. Each of nine bouts will pit a Marine veteran versus an Army veteran. For tickets and information, call 871-1171. Reduced general admission ticket rates of $12 are available if ordered before Feb. 23 at 5 p.m.

Baseball sign-ups

Registration for Columbia Falls Baseball for ages 5 -12, including T-ball, Rookie, Minor and Major leagues, will take place at the Columbia Falls Fire Hall on Feb. 25 and March 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Assessments for Minors and Majors will take place at Glacier Gateway Elementary School on March 25, with Minors from 1-3 p.m. and Majors from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Winter workout for Minors and Majors will begin at Ruder Elementary School on March 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Softball sign-ups

Registration for the Columbia Falls Youth Softball Association's spring season will continue through March 12. Forms are available in the lobby of all local banks and at the offices of all local schools. Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
