RONAN - The Charlo Lady Vikings will travel to Butte for the divisional tournament after splitting two games at the District 14-C Tournament over the weekend in Ronan.
On Friday, Feb. 17, the Lady Vikings wasted little time, using runs of 6-0 and 18-0 to build a 24-3 lead by the early part of the second quarter en route to a convincing 49-25 victory over the Arlee Scarlets.
Charlo came out on fire, getting seven points from Rachel Hoyt and five points from Kinley Pope in the opening period to build a 17-3 lead after one.
After Charlo took its 21-point lead, Arlee briefly rallied to get within 13 points early in the second half, but the Lady Vikings responded with a 12-5 spurt to take a 40-20 lead and coasted from there to advance to the championship game.
Deondra Brown scored 16 points, Hoyt and Pope each scored nine and five other Charlo players scored in the win.
The next night, the Lady Vikings faced familiar foe Superior for the district crown. Charlo had dropped both games to the Lady Bobcats on the year, each by just one point, and were looking for a reversal of fortune.
Unfortunately, Superior came out strong, scoring inside and out to take an 18-8 first-quarter lead and didn't look back, knocking off the Lady Vikings 52-40.
Pope kept her team in the game, scoring eight of her
team-leading 14 points in the first half to stay close, as
Charlo trailed just 29-21 at halftime. The Lady Bobcats created some separation out of the lockerroom, however, and a 10-0 run to open the second half gave them a 39-21 lead. The Lady Vikings wouldn't get within 12 the
rest of the way.
Hoyt added 11 points for Charlo and Brown notched seven against Superior. Despite the loss, Charlo will head to Butte this week to compete in the divisional tournament, looking to bounce back from just their third loss of the season.
