POCATELLO — Senior Peyton Dillon (120 pounds) and junior Matt Lockey had stellar first days at the 4A state wrestling tournament Friday at Holt Arena, advancing to the semis and leading the Bulldogs to an 11th place team finish among 26 teams after day one.
Dillon scored a two point win in the first round and a seven point win in the second, and will face Pocatello’s Taylor Higbee, the reigning 112 pound state champion, in the bottom half of a loaded bracket today.
Lockey scored a hard-fought 4-2 win over his Columbia opponent in overtime of his first round match, then scored a second period pin to advance to the semis. Lockey, the No. 3 seed, will face the No. 2 seed from Minico for a berth in the finals.
Senior Justin Pepperdine (182) and sophomore Adam Weindl (170) are also still wrestling today after remaining alive in consolation. After losing his first round match, Pepperdine bounced back to post three pins, including a 17 second pin of his Century opponent.
Weindl scored a first period pin in his first match, then lost to No. 2 seed in second round, before bouncing back to record two first period pins in a strong showing in his first state tournament.
Lewis Dunton (126) lost to No. 2 seed in first round, won in overtime against Twin Falls before falling to Kuna to end his tournament.
Troy Goodman (132) posted the only other win for Sandpoint, pinning his Twin Falls opponent in consolation before being eliminated.
