ROCHESTER, Minn. - Five was the magic number for the North Idaho College wrestling team on the opening day with five wrestlers advancing to the placing rounds of the NJCAA tournament.

Ryan Zumwalt, seeded No. 2 at 157 pounds, won both his matches by decision on Friday to advance to today's semifinal round.

Kyle Sweedman went 3-0 at 174 on the tournament's opening day, beating top-seeded Jacob Brown of Muskegon 3-2 along the way to advance.

"We knew that Kyle had a poor regional tournament, but got a big pin in the quarterfinals," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "He was in a dandy match in the first one, too. If he stays focused and keep things going, there's nothing that we thought he couldn't do. He's got a real athletic kid in the semifinals, but the way he's wrestling now, I'd put my money on Kyle. Ryan’s got an athlete, too. They’re going to be a couple of good matches.”

NIC is fifth in the team standings with 52.5 points. Defending champion Clackamas is third with 61.5 points after the first day. Labette is leading the tournament with 87.5 points.

“Those teams are going to be hard to catch,” Whitcomb said. “We just need to go out and get it going and need to keep winning. We’re hoping to put those kids in the finals, but there’s a lot of work to be done to get there.”

Joaquin Calderon lost in the quarterfinals at 125 after winning his first two matches, then was pinned in the consolation round.

Michael Rodriguez lost in the quarterfinals, but won three straight in the consolation round to remain in the running for third at 133.

Jarrett Morrill (141) lost his first match, but won three straight to remain in the running for third. Former Post Falls High standout Derrick Booth (149) was eliminated in the second round of the consolation bracket, as was W.V. Meyer at 165.

Caleb Rivera lost in the 184-pound quarterfinals and remains alive for third. Justin Korthius (195) was eliminated in the consolation round, as was heavyweight Justin Gillespie, who lost by a 3-2 decision in the consolation match.

“Overall, I was pleased with how the guys wrestled,” Whitcomb said. “Everyone scored points for us. Booth and Korthuis scored points and W.V. may have torn his meniscus in his first match, but got a pin. I really couldn’t have asked for more.”
