Sage N Sand Motel remodels rooms

MOSES LAKE - The Sage N Sand Motel is updating its look with an extensive remodel of the business.
Nearly two years ago, the business owners of 21 years, Richard and Chelie Nichols, started on the project, Richard Nichols said.
They focused on updating the 1940s-era rooms, completing remodeling work on 85 percent of the rooms.
The remodeled rooms boast flat screen TV's, some pillow top mattresses, updated paint and decor, and new bedding.
Outside 16 cameras keep an eye on the business and customers' vehicles.
The cameras' addition resulted in a motorcycle group recently selecting the Sage N Sand Motel to stay, Richard Nichols said.
A group representative liked the extra security for their motorcycles.
Customers include construction crews, fishermen and hunters.
Richard Nichols said his wife made each room homey with her choice of decor.
"They love it," he said of the customers. Some customers who visited previously request their favorite rooms and receive them whenever possible.
"For an older motel, I think we've done a pretty good job," he said.
The motel has a pool and barbecue area, which are well-used during the warmer months of the year.
The Nichols' business cards are found in each room, making the couple available for customers' phone calls, comments and concerns.
The hotel is under new management and generally, no longer allows customers to stay by the month, except for working crews, he explained.
They are striving to provide a nice place for the community by offering comfortable rooms at a reasonable price.
Richard Nichols described the motel's current group of housekeepers and employees as "excellent workers."
"They are a very well put-together crew," he said.
Some customers raved about their experience in their online reviews found at www.tripadvisor.com.
The business received a 4.5 out of a 5 star customer rating.
"I would recommend the Sage N Sand Motel to anyone who is looking for very quiet, clean rooms, a good price and comfortable bed," wrote one customer. "The staff is very friendly, which makes your stay much more enjoyable."
Chelie Nichols says she enjoyed updating the rooms. The work was a good fit for her talents.
"Every thing I've done in my life is finishing furniture, recovering it and sewing," she said.
She estimates they have six to eight rooms left to remodel.
Over the years, their clients have become their friends, she says.
"We've made a lot of good friends back here," she commented. "They come to visit us."
One hunting group represents three generations of a family, visiting the area since 1973.
Business is looking up this year, with some guests already booking rooms for family reunions later this year.
