COEUR d'ALENE - Close - but not quite enough.
Fabyon Harris finished with a team-high 14 points as the seventh-ranked College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles beat the North Idaho College Cardinals 64-58 in overtime to claim a second straight Scenic West Athletic Conference championship Saturday night at Rolly Williams Court.
With the win, CSI (25-3, 11-2 SWAC) will be the No. 1 seed in the Region 18 tournament starting March 8-10 in Salt Lake City.
NIC (21-7, 7-6) remains tied with Salt Lake for third in the conference after Snow won twice this weekend.
"We need to take care of business next week," NIC coach Jared Phay said. "We need to take care of Friday (at Utah State-Eastern) to keep ourselves in that No. 2-No. 3 scenario."
CSI led 39-23 early in the second half before the Cardinals mounted a rally. Freshman Kwame Bates tied the game at 48 with 1:01 remaining. Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation, with a 3-pointer by Antoine Hosley popping out with 16 seconds remaining and a Harris 3-pointer bouncing off to force overtime.
In the extra period, CSI scored the first seven points and sealed the game on four free throws by Pat Swilling to take a 63-56 lead with just under a minute left.
"We might have used too much getting back in the second half," Phay said. "Antoine had played 42 1/2 minutes and I knew he was out of gas. They hit some shots at the start of overtime and got rolling."
Hosley scored a game-high 25 points for NIC, which lost starting guard Keon Lewis to an ankle injury early in the first half. Lewis tried to return, but was unable to continue after halftime.
"We just fell a little short tonight," Hosley said. "We just need to start a little better next time and we'll be OK."
"There's never an easy game in this conference," CSI coach Steve Gosar said. "North's a really good ballclub. It's never easy to get wins on the road in the Scenic West."
