Zags open WCC tourney in Saturday semis

Gonzaga's men's basketball team will play the 8 p.m. semifinal Saturday in the West Coast Conference Tournament at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The defending tournament champion Bulldogs are the No. 2 seed, finishing second with a 13-3 record, one game behind regular-season champion and No. 1 seed Saint Mary's College which snapped the Bulldogs' string of WCC regular-season titles at 11, two shy of the all-time record of 13 held by UCLA from 1967-79 when the Bruins dominated what is now the Pacific-12 Conference. Gonzaga has finished first or second in the WCC regular season for 15 straight seasons.
The Bulldogs will face either No. 3 BYU, No. 6 San Diego or No. 7 Pepperdine. USD and Pepperdine will meet Thursday at 8 p.m. with the winner drawing BYU on Friday at 8 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The tournament opens Wednesday with No. 9 Santa Clara facing No. 8 Portland at 6 p.m. in a play-in game. That winner will face No. 5 San Francisco on Thursday at 6 p.m. with that winner drawing No. 4 Loyola Marymount on Friday at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Friday's winner gets the top-seed Gaels Saturday at 6 p.m. in the semifinals. SMC won its first outright regular-season title since 1989.
The championship game for the automatic NCAA Tournament berth is Monday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
The men's quarterfinals will be televised on ESPNU, and the men's semifinals will be aired on ESPN2.
• Gonzaga's women, the top seed in the West Coast Conference tournament, will play in the noon semifinal Saturday. The Bulldogs will face either No. 4 Saint Mary's, No. 5 Pepperdine, No. 8 San Francisco or No. 9 Loyola Marymount.
As the No. 1 seed the Bulldogs received a bye into the semis. Gonzaga clinched the top seed with a 14-2 conference mark, capturing its eighth straight WCC regular season crown.
San Francisco and Loyola Marymount meet in the play-in game on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The winner then faces No. 5 Pepperdine on Thursday at noon. The winner of Thursday's contest then matches up with Saint Mary's on Friday at noon with the winner facing Gonzaga on Saturday at noon. The Bulldogs' semifinal game can be seen on BYUtv.
With a 12-4 record, BYU and San Diego tied for second place. By virtue of its sweep over San Diego, BYU earned the second seed and will open in the semifinals. San Diego, like Saint Mary's, earns a bye and will compete in Friday's quarterfinal rounds.
All quarterfinal and semifinal games will be nationally televised on BYUtv. On Monday, the championship game will be shown nationwide at noon on ESPNU.
