COEUR d'ALENE - A Post Falls man died, and a Spokane Valley man was injured, in a three-vehicle crash that tied up westbound traffic on Interstate 90 for several hours Monday evening.

Walter W. Winward, 59, Post Falls, was traveling east on the highway at the Idaho/Washington state line shortly before 6 p.m. when he lost control of the 2000 Subaru Legacy he was driving. Winward's car crossed the median, went into the westbound lanes of the interstate, and collided with a 2003 Ford pickup driven by Larry D. Hartley, 59, Spokane Valley. Winwards's car then collided with a 2005 GMC boom truck driven by Dana A. Wentling, 35, Spokane Valley.

Winward and Hartley were transported to Kootenai Medical Center where Winward was pronounced dead. Hartley was in fair condition this morning.

In addition to the closure of the westbound lanes for about four hours, the eastbound lanes were blocked for a short time while police investigated.

Witnesses are encouraged to contact Idaho State Police with information (208) 209-8620.
