Gal's late goal lifts Chiefs past Royals

VICTORIA, British Columbia — Blake Gal scored to snap a 2-all tie with under four minutes remaining to lift the Spokane Chiefs past the Victoria Royals 4-2 in front of 4,823 in a Western Hockey League game at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena on Tuesday night.

Victoria opened the scoring in the first period and Spokane’s Mitch Holmberg tied the game at 1-1 on an assist from Mike Aviani.

After a scoreless second period, Colin Valcourt scored on an assist from Brenden Kitchton 1:30 into the third period to give Spokane a 2-1 lead.

Jamie Crooks tied the game six minutes later for Victoria, before Gal’s game-winner and an empty-net goal from Corbin Baldwin.

Mac Engel had 26 saves for Spokane (33-22-4-3, 73 points), which plays at Victoria again tonight at 7:05.

Spokane trails Vancouver by three points for the final home-ice advantage seed in the Western Conference playoffs.
