Pregnancy: Why does your back hurt?
Dr. Amy Spoelstra | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 12 years, 10 months AGO
Estimates show that almost 50 percent of all women experience back pain during pregnancy and 50-75 percent experience back pain during labor.
Many pregnant patients have begun to include chiropractic as part of their health care in an effort to achieve a comfortable pregnancy and to help facilitate an uncomplicated labor and delivery.
In 2005, a survey was mailed to 950 pregnant women and results showed that 31 percent of respondents used alternative therapies during pregnancy. Chiropractic was the third most common form of treatment sought along with massage and yoga.
Structural changes during pregnancy are a normal part of pregnancy but low back pain does not have to be common. During pregnancy, as the baby develops, the weight is shifted forward and this increases the stress on the disks, joints and nerves of the lumbar spine creating not only pain, but weakness in the low back. With this weakness, this can make labor more difficult because the body does not have the same control or function during contractions.
During the third trimester, hormones are released that relax ligaments in the pelvis and can decrease the stability of the pelvis and support to the spinal column. The pelvis is the foundation or building block to the entire spine and when the foundation is unstable due to subluxations (misalignments), this will cause other areas of the spine and the nervous system to poorly adapt. When the body adapts poorly to the environment or the stresses of life each day for long periods of time, the result is poor function and can lead to ill health.

Chiropractic goes beyond pain
Our bodies are amazing. Think about that statement. As you do, also think about the fact that you probably took a breath, blinked your eyes, moved a limb, moved your head, focused your eyes, digested food, healed a cut, wiggled a toe, salivated and a million other internal operations. Although you were not readily thinking about all of these processes, they were going on without the need for your input. Your brain, while also supplying you with conscious thought, is simultaneously orchestrating a laundry list of functions to keep you alive and well.
