St. Maries edges Post Falls JVs

ST. MARIES - Satchel Schetzle hit two free throws with less than 30 seconds left to break a 57-all tie and the St. Maries Lumberjacks, ranked third in 3A, went on to beat the Post Falls junior varsity 61-57 on Friday night.

After Schetzle's free throws, Post Falls turned the ball over, and Ryan Kennelly sealed it with two free throws with 10 seconds left.

"I felt like we had a decent control of the game at halftime, but the third quarter is getting us again ... we had to gut it out in the fourth," St. Maries coach Craig Wicks said.

Warren Joiner had 20 points and seven rebounds for St. Maries (6-2). Schetzle finished with 12 points, and Austin Linnemeyer had seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

Matt Hillman scored 14 points, Joe Pfennigs 12 for the Post Falls JV, which trailed by 11 at halftime, but battled back to take a four-point lead in the third quarter.

"I can see why they have such good varsities," Wicks said of the Trojans. "They just keep reloading."

St. Maries travels to Orofino on Tuesday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Defensive pressure and an early run helped the host Tigers take command en route to a nonleague victory, coach Tony Hanna said.

"We put a lot of pressure on them early. Our defense was really good in the first half," he said. "But give credit to (Charter) - they battled all the way to the end."

Keegan Scott led Timberlake with 14 points, including a 4-for-8 shooting night from 3-point range. Trevor Masterson had 12 points and Jon Thompson added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers (7-4), who host Lakeland on Thursday.

Brian Smith sank five 3-pointers and poured in 30 points for Coeur d'Alene Charter (6-5), which hosts Kootenai on Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic School.

BONNERS FERRY - Trailing 18-17 with three minutes left in the first half, the visiting Hawks used a press to go on a 10-0 run to close the half, then pulled away in the second half of the nonleague game.

Josie Coder and Cieana Close scored 16 points each for 4A Lakeland (9-6), and Darby Murray had eight steals and seven assists.

Aubree Wasmer scored eight points for 3A Bonners Ferry (5-7), which plays host to the Coeur d'Alene junior varsity today at 4.

Lakeland is home against Lewiston on Tuesday.

Tessa Vogel added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, and Brocklynn Thornton had nine points and nine rebounds for Clark Fork (7-2, 4-0 NSL).

Brie Benson scored seven points for Kootenai (2-6, 1-1), which plays at the Kellogg junior varsity on Monday.
