Bears rally past Bulldogs

MOSCOW - Maggie Kirscher scored a team-high 13 points, but once again turnovers proved costly, as the Sandpoint Bulldogs fell 39-34 to the Moscow Bears in a 4A Inland Empire League clash Saturday night at Bear Den.

Hailey Olin added nine for the Bulldogs (6-8, 0-3 4A IEL), who built a 14-11 halftime lead and led into the fourth quarter. The Bears made 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter, and the Bulldogs were plagued by mistakes for the second straight league game.

"What it came down to tonight was 24 turnovers," said Bulldogs assistant coach Melvin Speelmon. "Overall we played a pretty good game, and had our moments, but too many turnovers let this one get away."

Amanda Bigler scored 14 points to lead the Bears (6-9, 3-0), who are now in the driver's seat to host the Region 1 tournament.

Sandpoint is at Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

POST FALLS - Chelsea Waters scored 14 points, Tisha Phillips 11 to lead the visiting and second-ranked Bengals (11-2, 2-1 5A Inland Empire League) past the Trojans at The Arena.

"We just didn't come mentally focused to play," Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. "I feel we were prepared as we were for any game this year, and to not come out ready to play was discouraging. We had a good week of practice; we were ready for everything they did. And it was just like we played scared."

Dani Failor had seven points and eight rebounds for Post Falls (8-5, 1-2), which travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

BONNERS FERRY - Sophomore Aubree Wasmer totaled 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists, and the host Badgers jumped out to a 13-2 lead after one quarter en route to the victory over the Viking junior varsity.

"We're getting better," Bonners Ferry coach Travis Hinthorn said. "We have become more competitive, and we are winning the close games."

Sara Chalich scored 14 points, Brittany Tackett 13 for the Coeur d'Alene JV.

Bonners Ferry (6-7) travels to Moscow on Thursday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Amanda Hobson had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots as the host Royals defeated the Knights in Mountain Christian League play at Canfield Middle School.

Kana Shanley added nine points and 10 assists for North Idaho Christian, and Sarah Kaschmitter had eight rebounds.
