COEUR d'ALENE - The complete fifth series of "Doctor Who" went where? With whom? The police want to know.

More than 200 DVDs - including the British science fiction program and many other movies and series - valued at a total of more than $4,600 were stolen from the Hastings entertainment store in Coeur d'Alene, according to a police report.

The store, located at 101 E. Appleway Ave., noticed the discs were missing following an inventory check at the end of last month.

Managers at the store told police they believe the thefts occurred some time in December.

"That's a highly unusual number of DVDs to walk out the door" as shoplifted items, said Coeur d'Alene Police spokeswoman Sgt. Christie Wood.

She wouldn't say if police are investigating it as employee theft or a major run by a shoplifter or shoplifters.

She said police are keeping all options on the table as they investigate further.

"We just got (the case)," Wood said Monday.

A basket filled with a dozen empty lock-box cases for DVDs and Blu-ray discs from Hastings turned up in a parking lot near a Dollar Tree location at 406 W. Neider Ave., police said. The basket had the Hastings name on it, as did a reusable grocery bag found with the empty cases.

A Hastings store manager said the lock boxes that were recovered had contained mostly box sets of discs.

Which sounds about right.

The manager said the majority of the missing inventory, following last month's check, was shown to be stolen box sets.

Managers provided police with a document indicating the value and number of stolen items. They described it as a "huge" shortage.
