COEUR d'ALENE - The last time Post Falls and Lake City faced off in boys basketball, Lake City sophomore post Kyle Guice was unable to play due to a sprained ankle.

Guice made his presence felt on Tuesday night as he blocked a layup from Post Falls point guard Marcus Colbert with less than 20 seconds remaining and the Timberwolves went on to upset the top-ranked Trojans 39-36 in a 5A Inland Empire League game at Lake City High.

"I've felt we had a good team all year," Lake City coach Jim Winger said. "We've been harping at them since Day 1. We're so new this year that it's taken this group some time to build some confidence."

Trailing 39-36, Post Falls (11-1, 1-1 5A IEL) forward Luke Thoreson missed a 3-point attempt with five seconds remaining and the Trojans were unable to get another shot off.

"We've had some big wins, then we digress in the next game," Winger said. "This is a huge confidence booster for us right now."

Trailing 28-17 after three quarters, Lake City (7-6, 1-1) outscored Post Falls 22-8 in the fourth.

"We do all the things on offense others don't want to," Winger said. "But we wanted to slow it down against them tonight. We didn't want to get into a track meet with them."

Riley Moreen also had a blocked shot in the final minute to preserve the win for Lake City, which was coming off a 24-point loss at Coeur d'Alene on Friday night.

"Riley and Kyle played big for us tonight," Winger said. "If we keep playing like that, we'll go up a few notches. Those guys were big game-changers for us."

Guice had nine points for Lake City, which hosts Lewiston on Friday.

“This was a really big win,” Guice said. “We wanted to come out and do well. We played hard and I thought we did a good job as a team.”

Sophomore point guard Justin Pratt hit two free throws in the final 46 seconds to round out the scoring for Lake City.

“I was a little nervous about going to the line,” Pratt said. “They’re the No. 1 team in the state and it was pretty loud in the gym. I couldn’t think (at the line). We know we’re a good team and it was a big confidence builder after beating the top team in the state.”

Post Falls had two points in the final two minutes.

“I did a poor job of coaching in the fourth quarter,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “This loss is all on me. I asked the guys to take good shots, and that ended up taking us out of what was working.”

Colbert had 12 points, followed by Michael Hillman with 11 points for Post Falls. Hillman fouled out with 1:22 remaining in the game.

“We were taking too many perimeter shots,” McLean said. “We played well through three quarters, but I let us down in the fourth.”

Post Falls will travel to Coeur d’Alene on Friday.
