Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years AGO
Passed away Jan. 10, 2012, in Coeur d'Alene following a stroke. Mary Evelyn was born Jan. 19, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, to William E. and Mary Tucker Shacklett.
She graduated from El Paso High School in 1946 and thereafter the family moved to Oakland, Calif., where she met her husband, Richard C. Altman. They were married on May 29, 1949, and moved to San Francisco, where they raised three children. She worked at the University of California San Francisco, from 1962 to 1991 retiring as the administrator of off-site university leases. They retired to Santa Rosa, Calif., in 1991 where they loved living for 15 years. Following Dick's death she moved to Coeur d'Alene to be closer to her children.
Mary Evelyn loved music and played clarinet in two community bands for many years in Santa Rosa. She was an avid line dancer and ferocious pinochle player. She was a people person, loved meeting and getting to know people, and put these talents to use with the Newcomers Club of Santa Rosa. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and Scrabble.
Mary Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her two brothers.
She is survived by her children: Teresa Anne Anderman (husband Paul), Patricia Sue Grendell (husband Robert) and Richard C. Altman Jr. (wife Debra). She is also survived by five grandchildren: Matt, Janice, Nick, Steve and Daniel; and one great-grandchild, Tyler.
Mary Evelyn was a wonderful loving outgoing person. She will be loved, remembered and sorely missed by her family and friends.
At Mary Evelyn's request, no services will be held at this time. A family gathering is planned for later this summer. Neptune Society is in charge of the arrangements.
