Glacier High School finished second and Flathead High School fourth at the Bozeman Hawker Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament over the weekend.

Glacier had champions in five events — the most by any school — but that wasn’t enough to overcome Bozeman High School’s dominance in Public Forum and Policy Debate. Bozeman swept the top four places in those events en route to 167.5 points and the team title.

Glacier finished with 126.5 points and Flathead had 85 points.

“What Bozeman did in those two events was pretty remarkable and really tough to overcome from our point of view — but we battled back and I am definitely encouraged,” said Greg Adkins, head coach of Glacier.

Glacier winners were Lukas Dregne in Lincoln Douglas Debate; Allison Woodruff in Impromptu; Keckeley Habel and Brittany Dull in Duo Interpretation; Tanner Maroney in Serious Interpretation and Brandon Books in Memorized Public Address.

Flathead was led by Serena Brosten’s individual championship in Legislative Debate.

The Bozeman meet was the final regular-season competition before the Class AA state meet Jan. 27-28 in Helena.

“Bozeman is clearly the favorite this year, but Sentinel, Flathead and Glacier are in the trophy hunt for sure,” Adkins said of the state meet. Glacier is the defending Class AA champion.
