A weapon against Osteoporosis
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years AGO
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder that compromises bone strength and predisposes an individual to an increased risk of a fracture. An estimated 44 million Americans suffer from osteoporosis making it more widespread than heart attacks, diabetes and coronary artery disease combined.
The severity of this disease is based on the increased risk of bone fractures. A fracture of a vital bone at an age later in life can be detrimental. Why? Because 90-98 percent of our bone mass is accumulated by the age of 20. Therefore, a fracture at 50 years of age or older is tougher on the body to heal. Additionally, after having suffered a fracture to a bone, such as a vertebra, the risk of having a second vertebral facture increases five times. Another startling fact is that 24 percent of hip fractures, in individuals over the age of 50 years, have died in the year following the fracture!
What can be done to rage war against this wide spread disease? Physical therapy is a form of treatment that can help individuals suffering from Osteoporosis. An Osteoporosis physical therapy program includes mental imagery to improve posture, site-specific exercises, balance training, walking/gait training, scapular stabilization and body mechanics education.
Pinnacle Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine has incorporated such treatment plans in their clinics. Lisa Smalley, MPT has recently received additional expertise training in regards to the treatment of Osteoporosis by means of physical therapy.
Additionally, there are many universal recommendations for patients with Osteoporosis. An adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, fall prevention, and avoidance of tobacco use and excessive alcohol intake can help patients suffering from this disease.
