A new living option for seniors
Brian Walker | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 3 months AGO
POST FALLS - Living on the third story of an apartment building with arthritis in her knees and no elevator, Diane Sullivan needed a change in her living quarters.
"Needless to say, it was very painful," the disabled 61-year-old said.
But, after a few years of looking, Sullivan has found her place.
Sullivan is among those planning to move into Silver Creek, a 55-and-older affordable housing project off Idahline Road on the west side of Post Falls. Residents expect to move in about a month after the certificate of occupancy is obtained.
"It's everything I've wanted," said Sullivan, referring to amenities such as a washer/dryer hookup and computer room.
While the finishing touches are being put on Silver Creek's 42-unit, $3.8 million first phase, Caldwell-based builder-owner Community Development Inc. has announced ground will be broken on the 40-unit, $3.5 million second phase in about a month.
The second phase will be similar to the first phase in that there will also be a tot lot, clubhouse, exercise room, laundry rooms, storage units and covered parking.
Both phases are funded by a tax credit through the Idaho Housing and Finance Association, a construction loan and investors.
Monthly rent ranges from $282 to $664 per month, depending on income level and apartment size. The project is open to renting to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. At least one person living in the unit must be 55 or older.
Karen Brower, the on-site manager, said 12 units have been reserved in the first phase, leaving 30 available.
"In the winter, seniors are less likely to get out (and change their living circumstances)," said Brower, referring to relatively slow demand for the apartments.
Sullivan has been living at a friend's house in Athol and can't wait for a place that she and her cat Candy can call home.
"I'm looking forward to taking a book and coffee and sitting out on my balcony this spring and summer," she said.
Silver Creek to host open house
n There will be an open house at the new Silver Creek apartments, an affordable senior living facility in Post Falls, on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applications will be available and staff will be on hand for tours and to answer questions. The complex is between the Flying J and Seltice Way off Idahline Road. Information: 457-0727
