WARDEN - The Warden Development Council (WDC) presented awards to members of the community on Wednesday.

"It is my honor and privilege to recognize these folks that have helped all year long," said Susie Barr, president of the council. "And there are so many that are not recognized for their wonderful works, it is absolutely humbling."

Tires West won the award for business of the year. Tires West Owner Jeff Whitaker accepted the award.

Barr recalled Whitaker's constant willingness to help people out.

"When they are sweeping the floor after the Christmas program, who is it that's got the push broom and he is cleaning up while we're dealing with the cocoa and stuff? It is Jeff. So Tires West and Jeff, thank you so much."

The Warden volunteer firefighters of Grant County Fire District 4 won the award for community volunteers of the year.

Fire Chief Randy Wiggins accepted the award and invited them to present the award to the volunteer firefighters during their firefighters banquet on Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in at the Warden Senior Center.

Tyce Cutler, president of the WDC board, praised the fire district's dedication to serving the community.

"It's an opportunity to let people in the community know more about what some of these volunteers are doing. The fire department is always in need of more volunteers and this is a good opportunity to make a lot of ... the younger people became aware of some of the traditions that are going on and maybe encourage them to be part of that tradition and make this community something that we've all been proud of for many, many years."

Three WDC members won awards for their work during the past year.

Darlene Kruger was recognized for starting up the Miss Warden program, Kayla Kight was recognized for serving as co-chair of the Miss Warden parade float and Velma Meiners was recognized for her contributions to Miss Warden and Warden Community Days.

Their work has helped the council promote the community of Warden, said Barr.
