POST FALLS - Post Falls businessman Marc Eberlein has announced he's running for the Kootenai County Commission seat held by Todd Tondee.

Eberlein, a Republican and political newcomer who calls himself a "solid conservative," owns Eberlein Fine Cabinetry.

He said he was "flattered" that some friends suggested he make a run for the seat and later realized that making a difference starts at the local level.

"Duty and obligation overcame the excuses," he said, referring to why he decided to run. "(Supporters) said we need a candidate to represent Kootenai County who has conservativeideals and respects private rights.

He said he has the managerial skills and thrives on new challenges and research.

Eberlein said, if elected, he would either close his cabinet business or have someone manage it to dedicate full-time focus to the county. He also helps operate a rock quarry in Eastern Montana.

"I can make the time and our businesses have done well," he said.

Eberlein said he has concerns about the direction the county is going and believes liberalism is permeating the country.

"We need moral folks in office who fear God," he said.

Eberlein said he also believes a "liberal agenda" regarding land use and zoning is conflicting with private property rights.

Eberlein, who opposes hiring a county administrator, said restructuring the county's government would diminish the accountability to the voters and put power in the hands of a few.

"The system of checks and balances is hindered," he said. "As it stands today, voters have no problem firing someone who doesn't perform."

Eberlein said he would fight for less government and more personal responsibility.

"We need slim, trim government," he said. "I don't know of one family or business that doesn't find this essential to survive in today's economic climate. There's always ways to slim things up, and sometimes it takes a new thought process to come up with those."

He said he doesn't believe a new jail needs to be pursued because voters have already turned down two proposals.

Eberlein, 52, has been married to his wife, Elaine, for 33 years. They moved to Post Falls in 2001 from Tonasket, Wash.

Eberlein has a variety of previous experience, including growing organic garlic, having an orchard, owning a pawn shop, being a machinist and working in the timber industry.

He said he would like to hold a monthly meeting with residents to create more openness and transparency.

"If a government becomes an entity unto itself for the sake of itself, this is contrary to the reason governments are formed," he said.

No movement in region to go that route to enhance school safety

While the idea of arming teachers, as a means to increase school safety, is catching on in some areas, there’s no such momentum in Kootenai County.
