Close, Hawks bottle up Bulldogs in 4A IEL play

SANDPOINT - Cieana Close scored a team-high 12 points to lead the Lakeland Hawks past the Sandpoint Bulldogs 47-33 in a 4A Inland Empire League game at Les Rogers Court on Friday night.
"They just got us tonight," Sandpoint assistant coach Melvin Speelmon said. "They pressed us and we couldn't get over that hump. Lakeland did really well defensively tonight and we just couldn't get the ball inside."
Hailey Olin scored 16 points for Sandpoint (8-11, 0-4 4A IEL), which hosts Lewiston today.
Toni Tapplin scored nine points for Lakeland (11-9, 2-2), which hosts Sandpoint to open the 4A Region 1 tournament on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

PLUMMER - Michelle Whaley had 11 points, 10 steals and four assists to lead the Knights past the visiting Tigers in a North Star League game.
"We came out and played a good, solid first half," Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. "We shot the ball really well and got them to turn the ball over quite a bit."
Shannon Miller added 10 points for Lakeside (7-8, 4-2 NSL), which travels to Kootenai on Tuesday.
Kami McKinnon scored 16 points for Mullan (2-10, 0-6), which hosts the Coeur d'Alene freshman team Monday.

"Kris hit some shots for us right off the bat and got us going," Lakeside coach Bill Brebner said. "It was senior night, so we were able to play everyone and force some turnovers to get going in the first half."
Damon Flemming-Soto added 14 points for Lakeside (10-5, 5-0 NSL), which hosts Logos on Tuesday.
Tyler Henderson scored 16 points for Mullan (0-12, 0-6), which hosts the Coeur d'Alene freshmen on Monday.

"The Post Falls JV team is a heck of a squad," Kootenai coach Andrew Whipple said. "They are a well-coached team. I was proud of our guys and our effort. They played as hard as they could, and that's all I can ask for in this game."

COEUR d'ALENE - The Post Falls Trojans have 11 of 12 wrestlers alive in the championship bracket to lead the 13-team field with 70 points at the North Idaho Rumble at Coeur d'Alene High.
Final-day action begins at 9 a.m. today.
Timberlake's Cody Hongslo (120 pounds), Preston Rhodes (138), Christian Heth (182) and Allan Foote (heavyweight) advanced to the semifinals.
Timberlake sits in fifth place.
"We had a good first round, but lost a couple heartbreakers in the quarterfinals," Timberlake coach Ryan Montang said. "We wrestled well and there is no reason we can't come away with a top-2 finish."
