NIC teams, players named NJCAA academic all-stars
Four North Idaho College teams and six individual athletes were recognized for their academic and athletic achievements recently by the NJCAA.
Both the NIC men's and women's basketball teams, the volleyball team and the women's soccer team were named an All-Academic Team by the NJCAA.
Six NIC athletes were honored with NJCAA Student-Athlete Awards out of nearly 60,000 student-athletes who competed in the NJCAA for the 2011-2012 academic year, representing more than 3,500 teams in 28 different sports.
NIC athletes recognized for the 2011-2012 academic year are:
* Tia Sharp, women's soccer player from Bozeman, Mont., won the Superior Academic Achievement Award with a 3.95 GPA.
* Julia Salmio, women's basketball player from Vantaa, Finland, won the Superior Academic Achievement Award with a 3.89 GPA.
* Danielle Meehan, volleyball player from Post Falls, won the Superior Academic Achievement Award with a 3.92 GPA.
* Lauryn Martel, women's soccer player from Bozeman, Mont., won the Superior Academic Achievement Award with a 3.8 GPA.
* Kristin Kaufman, women's soccer player from Loveland, Colo., won the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award with a 3.72 GPA.
* Brianna Bishop, softball player from Twin Falls, won the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award with a 3.72 GPA.
'Cardinal Heat' NIC softball camp offered in July
COEUR d'ALENE - Room is still available for players ages 10-18 to sign up for the North Idaho College's Cardinal Heat position play offensive camp and pitcher's camp July 23-26 at Finucane Park, located on the northwest corner of Prairie Avenue and Fourth Street in Hayden.
Instructing at the camps will be NIC softball coach Don Don Williams, NIC players, Adelphi University coach and former NIC player and assistant coach Paige Smith, Columbia Basin coach Adrian Ochoa and University of Alabama-Birmingham assistant coach Holly Kzran.
The camp will be divided into two heats with one specifically for pitching skills and the other a position play/offensive heat camp. The position play offense camp will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the pitchers camp will go from 7:45 to 9:45 a.m. each day.
The bonus pitchers camp is only available to campers participating in the position play offense camp.
