* SWIMMING

Michael Phelps won another duel with Ryan Lochte at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, edging his rival in their most stirring race yet to take the 200-meter individual medley.

Phelps had a significant advantage for Saturday night's race at Omaha, Neb., coming in fresh while Lochte had to recover quickly after winning the 200 backstroke a half-hour earlier.

If Lochte was tired, he sure didn't look it, going stroke for stroke with the 14-time Olympic gold medalist. But Phelps led at every turn and got to the wall in 1 minute, 54.84 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year.

Lochte was right behind in 1:54.93. The two slapped hands and headed off to London for the races that really matter.

* TRACK AND FIELD

Allyson Felix ran a lifetime-best 21.69 seconds in the 200-meter final on a rain-soaked track at Eugene, Ore. She easily pulled away from the field, no signs of the stress from the last week weighing her down.

Still to be determined is her fate in the 100 meters. Felix and training partner Jeneba Tarmoh finished in a third-place tie last Saturday.

They're soon going to announce their plans for breaking the tie. But not right now, said Tarmoh, who finished a distant fifth.

Wearing neon yellow compression sleeves on her legs, Felix was easy to spot as she settled into the blocks. She was even easier to detect once she flew off the starting line, jumping out to a commanding lead. She never looked back, smiling as she crossed the finish line and clapping her hands, before raising them high over her head.

* GYMNASTICS

Danell Leyva clinched an automatic spot on the U.S. Olympic team at San Jose, Calif., almost 20 years after fleeing Cuba with his mother and sister.

Leyva edged teammate John Orozco by almost a point in an entertaining game of "Can you top this?" Because both finished in the top three in at least three events, they automatically qualified for the Olympic team.
