A full field of 180 golfers turned out at Cabinet View Golf Course on Saturday to celebrate the life of Greg “Peach” Kambel at the eighth annual Kambel Scrambel.

With a slew of sponsors to keep the fun going, the hundreds in lime-green T-shirts spent all day golfing and drinking in a testament to one of the area’s most fun guys, who passed away Jan. 31, 2005, while playing his weekly game of basketball.

“It’s kind of a party out here,” said Dann Rohrer, one of the event’s organizers. “Greg loved to have fun, and this keeps his memory alive.”

Before tee-off, the traditional toast was given in Kambel’s name and the attendees (the ones of legal drinking age at least) took a shot of peach schnapps in “Peach’s” name.

The liquor was a big part of the event; with the top six scramble teams in both net and gross got some DeKuyper’s schnapps and a bottle of Maker’s Mark, provided by the company, which was one of the sponsors.

Tired golfers were rewarded at the end of their long scramble with a plate of hot lasagna, spaghetti and a warm dish of peach cobbler to add some food to the rather liquid diets of the tournament.

But even with the party going hard, the money raised went to scholarships for Libby Loggers, and the event had raised more than $21,000 in the previous seven years.

The weather for the event was balmy and mostly-clear skies, prompting one speaker to proclaim, “Peach is up there looking down on us.”
