A small grass fire was extinguished by firefighters Thursday at the Third Street dock area on Tubbs Hill, the second caused by humans in two days at the popular, downtown hiking spot.

The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire District responded at 7:15 p.m. to the report of the fire.

The area affected was less than a half-acre in size, but was inaccessible by foot or trail to firefighters. The county's fire boat was dispatched and used its fire pump to quickly extinguish the fire, reports the Coeur d'alene Fire Department.

Witnesses at the scene did not hear any fireworks prior to spotting Thursday's fire but did report seeing people and gave police a description of the individuals who fled the area.

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is investigating the cause and attempting to locate those people.

This is the second fire caused by humans on Tubbs Hill in the last two days. Both fires were discovered by boaters and reported immediately before the fires grew in size.

The Coeur d’Alene fire and police departments are asking for the public’s help, and urge citizens to immediately report any fires or fireworks use seen at any city parks.

The extended hot weather forecast will change the fire danger to high on Tubbs hill.
