Reservoir hits record pool level

Lake Koocanusa hit a record pool elevation of 2,459.7 feet Wednesday, 0.7 feet above the reservoir’s normal full pool behind Libby Dam.
In an agreement with Canada and BC Hydro, the Army Corps of Engineers is letting the large reservoir store up to two feet of extra water if needed to reduce downstream flooding on the Kootenai River and Kootenay Lake.
That higher pool won’t pose a risk for residents downstream of the dam, but could lead to a flooding of roads and marinas above the dam, Army Corps spokesman Matt Rabe told the Spokane Spokesman-Review.
Inflow into Koocanusa increased from 60,000 to 61,000 cubic feet per second Wednesday, with discharges from Libby Dam at 48,000 cubic feet per second.
Because of that increased outflow from Libby Dam, Kootenai River is expected to remain at or above flood stage into next week, the Army Corps said.
Emergency measures to stabilize a levee downstream of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, were completed Saturday.
Four additional people were deployed Wednesday night and Thursday morning to help the Kootenai River Flood Team with levee concerns near Bonners Ferry, the Army Corps said.
The Kootenai River stage at Bonners Ferry was up from 1,766.3 to 1,766.6 feet Thursday morning and expected to remain stable or decrease. Flood stage is 1,764 feet.
Additionally, Boundary County, Idaho, made a second direct assistance request, asking the Army Corps to make temporary levee repairs near Copeland. That work was expected to be funded and begin today, the Army Corps said.
The Kootenai River Basin received 5.24 inches of rain in June.
