FLATHEAD RESERVATION — Long, hot summer days are perfect for backyard barbecue grilling, but the Tribal Wildlife Management Program would like to remind residents to keep bear attractants contained.

Bears have a keen sense of smell, and barbecue grills or other food sources could easily attract bears to your neighborhood.

“If we eat it or our animals eat it, bears will eat it too. It’s far easier to prevent bear problems than to change a bear’s behavior afterward,” said Dale Becker, Tribal Wildlife Program Manager.

Here are a few simple rules to avoid attracting bears to your grill:

- Clean your grill regularly.

- Store grills in the basement or other secure locations when not in use. Clean spilled or dripped grease from deck area.

- Do not leave food cooking outside unattended. Bears have been known to snatch sizzling steaks right off the grill!

- Do not leave scented products outside. Bears will sample anything that smells good, even nonfood items such as suntan lotion, insect repellent, soap and candles.

If you are experiencing bear problems and you would like help with identification and securing attractants, contact the Tribal Wildlife Management Program or Tribal Conservation Officers at 883-2888.
