POLSON — St. Ignatius resident Byron Joseph Colon, 20 years old, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with a weapon, counts I and II, both felonies, in Lake County District Court on Wednesday, June 27.

According to court documents, on June 16, 2012, Colon purposely and knowingly aimed a .32 caliber handgun at two victims and threatened to shoot them in front of a St. Ignatius general store.

Surveillance cameras from Doug Allard’s General Store show Colon dropping his gun on the floor of the store while attempting to pay for gas. After exiting the store, he allegedly confronted two individuals, pointing the gun at one and to the other saying a string of profanities before climbing into a parked van.

As he drove away, witnesses said Colon leaned out of the vehicle’s window, pointed the gun at the second victim and again said a string of profanities, but added, ”I’ll kill you.”

He was arrested a short time later along with a .32 caliber pistol he had in his possession.

The Honorable Judge Kim Christopher denied Colon’s lawyer’s request for bond reduction and his bail remained set at $10,000.

The court set the matter for omnibus hearing on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012 at 9 a.m. with a jury trial commencing on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 at 9 a.m.

Note from the Newsroom

It won’t be long now. As the days become longer and the sun beats down upon us, working to melt the frozen earth, I can’t help but be warmed inside as I anticipate another summer in the Mission Valley. I know it’s only March, and another big snowstorm wouldn’t be unheard of, but we’re on the up-swing now, and it’s about time.
