A 39-year-old man found dead May 18 inside a Plummer trailer home died as a result of a blunt-force impact to his head that ruptured an artery in his neck, the Benewah County coroner said Monday.

The rupture of Thomas R. Schoolcraft's left vertebral artery caused massive bleeding at the base of his brain, called a "massive subarachnoid hemorrhage," Coroner Ron Hodge said. The artery supplies blood to the brain.

Hodge received the findings Monday afternoon from the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office, which conducted the autopsy.

The findings showed Schoolcraft, of Worley, had a broken jaw.

Joseph L. James, 28, of Plummer, has been arrested in connection with Schoolcraft's death.

James is facing multiple charges, including criminal homicide, under Coeur d'Alene Tribal code. He remains in custody at the Kootenai County jail on $500,000 bond.

James pleaded not guilty to the charges in tribal court.

The trailer home Schoolcraft was found dead inside is across the street from the Coeur d'Alene Tribe headquarters.

The FBI has been calling Schoolcraft's death "suspicious." Agency officials have declined to comment on the case.
