Child Services hit by arson in Libby

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is looking for help from the public after someone set fire to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services’ Child and Family Services office on Farm-to-Market Road.

The Libby Volunteer Fire Department responded to the building at 6:39 a.m. on July 8 after a report of heavy smoke coming from the area. An active fire was located in the office and extinguished. A later investigation led to the belief that the fire was started by arson.

The case is still under investigation, and anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at (406) 293-4112, extension 3.


Officers with the Kalispell Police Department responded to U.S. 2 West after a man took a hot dog, then got angry, threw the hot dog on the ground and left the store without paying.

A group of about five youths were reported swing dancing on the roof of a building owned by a non-profit on Second Street West.

An irritated Airport Road resident complained about loud music, partying and a fire at his neighbors’ residence and also said the same people were stealing his cable.

A middle-aged man wearing all black was reported standing in a roundabout as people drove through.

A girl was arrested and transported to the Flathead County Juvenile Detention Center after a physical disturbance at her home on Fourth Avenue West.

A U.S. 2 West resident complained that someone threw garbage in their trash can, and that they pay for their garbage disposal, so it is theft of services.

A blue 1997 Chevrolet truck with tool boxes, a ladder rack and a ladder was stolen on Hutton Ranch Road.

A woman was arrested for shoplifting at a business on U.S. 93 South.

Prescription medication was stolen on West Idaho Street.

Someone stole beer from a business on Hutton Ranch Road.

A bicycle was stolen from a garage on Kara Drive.

Someone broke into a vehicle on Ninth Street East and stole money from the glove box.

Drug activity was reported on First Avenue East.

A debit card was reported stolen on Spokane Avenue.


The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office received calls from two different men who claimed they were being controlled. A man on Brunner Road in Columbia Falls reported he was being harassed by people in full camouflage and face paint. He said his phone had been cloned and he was being controlled and manipulated. Another man, on Montana 35, said people had pushed him into drugs and were controlling him, and that they “have a controlled burn on him.”

A “mean deer” was reported in a field near Conrad Drive. The man who reported the deer said he believed it had been shot and all the other deer were “looking at it funny.” An officer who responded to the scene reported all the deer seemed to be getting along.

A pair of young children in diapers were seen walking down Patriot Way. They were taken back to their home, where their grandfather was found. He had put them down for a nap, then taken a nap himself. The children woke up first and left the premises.

Deputies responded to fireworks calls on Antelope Trail in Whitefish and Echo Lake Road in Bigfork.

A very insistent Shelby resident called wanting to talk to a deputy about religion, politics and Mormons.

A young man at Lion Lake was reported taking pictures of children, while engaging in apparently lewd behavior.

A resident of Gopher Lane in Marion reported her husband took her vehicle, purse and keys on July 4 and has also vandalized other vehicles she borrowed from friends.

A woman reported that two boys she knows punched her car at Foy’s Lake, and that the same boys have been harassing her for more than a year.

Meanwhile, a dozen teenagers, 10 boys and two girls, were reported drinking alcohol on a dock at Foy’s Lake.

Possible drug activity was reported on South Main Street.

A utility trailer was stolen from La Brant Road.

Someone got into a shed on Grand Drive in Bigfork by moving a piece of cardboard, then kicked open the padlocked door from the inside.

A purse and iPhone were stolen on U.S. 2 East in Coram.


The Columbia Falls Police Department responded to a fireworks call on Red Bridge Road, where several people were having a big party on their back porch.

Papers were stolen from a van on Second Avenue West.

A bicycle was stolen on Ninth Street West.


The Whitefish Police Department received a report of a physical disturbance on West Eighth Street.

Thefts were reported on Spokane Avenue and Baker Avenue.


Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of disorderly conduct.
