Pappy Boyington's Marine Corps League Detachment 966 is planning a motorcycle rally on Saturday, July 21 to honor Northern Idaho Medal of Honor recipients.

The rally will start at 9 a.m. at the Kmart parking lot, corner of U.S. 95 and Neider Avenue, and end at the Casino Resort, with four stops along the way.

The route will be along the newly established Medal of Honor highway which runs along Highway 3 from Rose Lake to Lewiston. Proceeds of the fundraiser, which costs $25 per person, will go toward the MOH signage and the Marine Corps League charities, such as Toys for Tots.

The Medal of Honor highway designation was brought to life in early 2011 by MCL member Jerry Wombolt.

Sen. John Goedde introduced Senate Bill No. 1050 to name Idaho State Highway 3, which spans about 120 miles and connects U.S. 12 near Spalding with Interstate 90 near Rose Lake, as the "North Idaho Medal of Honor Highway."

The bill was approved "to honor Idahoans awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their service in our armed forces."

Signage along the route will stand in silent testimonial to the heroism of North Idaho's six Army, four Navy, and three Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipients.

"To have even one Medal of Honor recipient in the rural community would be a distinction, but the North Idaho Medal of Honor Highway signage will name about a dozen recipients with ties to this area ... that's incredible," said Kevin Gonzalez, Detachment spokesman.
