Betty Jane Swatman, 78, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2012 at her home in Hayden. She was born Sept. 15, 1933, at Willamette, Ore., the daughter of William and Elizabeth Kammerer.
Betty lived in Coos Bay, Ore., for 23 years, raising her family and worked at the Safeway store and became Safeway’s first female produce manager in Oregon. She later worked as a technical electronic assembly foreman, building metal detectors and similar electronics in the Portland area.
Betty married Lee Swatman in Vancouver, Wash., on March 9, 1996. She enjoyed painting scenery pictures of the Southwest and Outdoors. She also played guitar with winter friends in the Yuma, Arizona area. She was a member of Curves for about 10 years.
Survivors include Lee Swatman in Hayden, two sons; Ken and Rick Townsend, Eugene, Ore.; daughter Terry Ray of Junction City, Ore., and her first husband Lester Townsend of Albany, Ore. Her sister Virginia Priest, of Roseburg, Ore., and brother Robert of Canby, Ore., also survive. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Yates Funeral Home Hayden Chapel and Gathering Center, 373 East Hayden Avenue in Hayden.
