Donald G. Zigler, 80, of Hayden, went to be with the Lord on July 8, 2012. Donald was born on Jan. 9, 1932 in Tama, Iowa, the son of George and Edra (VanPelt) Zigler. He graduated from Tama High School. He married Elaine Kaisland and they had two daughters, Konnie and Jo Zigler. He and his wife later divorced.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where was disabled. He then returned to Tama, working at the Paper Mill and farmed. In 1959, Donald and his family moved to Rathdrum after purchasing the Feed and Fuel store there. In 1965, Donald became the postmaster of Rathdrum until his retirement.
Donald served on the City Council of Rathdrum, also serving as the mayor and chief of police of Rathdrum. He also was a state commander of the DAV. At one time, he owned a Piper Cub and always wanted to fly one more time before he died.
Mr. Zigler was preceded in death by his daughter Konnie Vranish, sister Iona Schultz, stepson, Gregg Smeltzer and one great granddaughter.
In 1996, he married Kathryn “Katy” Smeltzer. They moved from Rathdrum to Hayden in 2004. He is survived by his wife of Hayden, daughter Jo and husband Ron Bradley of Chelsea, Iowa, stepchildren, Beth Stirn of Herberton, Queensland, Australia, Frank Smeltzer of Hayden, Paul Smeltzer of Springfield, Mo., brother, Rev. William (Shirley) Zigler of Roseville, Calif., 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and his much loved dog, Killer.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial donations made to Hospice of North Idaho. Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday July 12, 2012, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel with Pastor Perry officiating.
