Lums advance to quarterfinals

CLACKAMAS, Ore. - Coeur d'Alene beat Barlow of Gresham, Ore., 12-4 and Cottonwood of Salt Lake City 16-1 in five innings on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals at the 12-team Clackamas Diamond Classic.

Chad Nyquist went 4 for 5 with five RBIs for the Lumbermen vs. Barlow, including a three-run triple in the fifth inning to put Coeur d'Alene ahead 4-3. He scored on brother Nick Nyquist's double, and Grant Curtis followed with an RBI single.

Coeur d'Alene, which lost 2-1 to Lake Oswego (Ore.) on Thursday, finished second in its three-team pod. The Lums opened bracket play vs. Cottonwood, which was third in its pod.

Nick Nyquist went 3 for 3 with an RBI, Jesse O'Hagan hit a two-run single in a seven-run third inning, and Joe Roletto had a two-run double in a seven-run fourth.

Coeur d'Alene (30-6) plays Westview of Portland today at 12:15 p.m. A win puts the Lums in the semifinals on Sunday; while a loss means a second game today.

Prairie A splits at Missoula tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Prairie Cardinals won once and lost once at the Mavs Invitational, beating the Lethbridge (Alberta) Miners 16-3 in five innings and lost to the Great Falls Electrics 4-2.

Prairie plays the Bitterroot Bucs and the Dillon Cubs today, and plays the Missoula Mavericks on Sunday.

SPOKANE - The Coeur d'Alene under-16 team fell to the Titans in the Spokane district championship game.

The Lumberjacks (24-5-1) will be the No. 2 seed from the district to the Washington state tournament beginning July 21 in Spokane.

Connor Cardinel had three hits, including a triple, Nathaniel English had two hits, including a double, and Michael Hicks had two hits and drove in three runs.
