Bayley in hunt after first day of U.S. Junior Amateur
STRATHAM, N.H. - Derek Bayley of Rathdrum shot a 2-over-par 74 on Monday and is tied for 31st place after the first day of the U.S. Junior Amateur golf championship at The Golf Club of New England.
Playing in what is considered the top junior amateur tournament in the country, Bayley, who will be a junior at Lakeland High this fall, had four birdies and six bogeys. The leader, Max McGreevy of Oklahoma City, who shot a 4-under 68, played in the same group as Bayley, and will do so in the second round today.
The top 64 players after today's final round of stroke play will advance to the match play portion of the tournament starting Wednesday.
Texas signee Beau Hossler, who tied for 29th in the U.S. Open last month, shot a 77 and is tied for 83, needing some work to make the cut for match play.
