STRATHAM, N.H. - Derek Bayley of Rathdrum shot a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday and advanced to the match play portion today at the U.S. Junior Amateur golf tournament at The Golf Club at New England.
Bayley, who will be a junior at Lakeland High this fall, shot a 5-over 149 for the 36 holes of qualifying, comfortably advancing to the Round of 64. Bayley, who tied for 28th, is seeded 30th, and will face 35th seed Joo-Young Lee of Hilliard, Ohio, this morning at 9:15 PDT.
"Derek has never played match play," said his father, Mike Bayley. "But I think it suits him well. I think being a three-sport athlete will suit him well."
Bayley started off bogey-bogey, but got it back to even par after 14. He hit into the water on 15 and double-bogeyed the hole, then bogeyed the next two holes. On the 487-yard par-4 18th, playing downwind, Bayley hit driver and gap wedge, then sank a 12-footer for birdie.
Three players tied for first in qualifying at 3-under 141. Max McGreevy of Oklahoma City, the first-day leader who played both days with Bayley, shot 79 on Tuesday and finished at 3-over 147. Beau Hossler, who made the cut at the U.S. Open last month, tied for 18th at 148.
